Directions

Instructions:

  • Explain that deep breathing can help us center ourselves and manage intense feelings.

  • Choose regular times to practice, such as:

    • Before or during prayer/tefillah: Use a moment of silence to transition from the mundane to the holy.

    • During transitions: Pause before a new activity to take a few breaths and refocus.

  • Demonstrate the finger-tracing breath:

    1. Hold one hand out as the “base” hand.

    2. Use your dominant hand’s index finger as the “tracing” hand.

    3. Slowly trace up the side of your thumb while breathing in, then down the other side while breathing out.

    4. Continue for each finger.

    5. Repeat the sequence again.

  • Have campers try it with you.

Group Reflection Questions:

  • How did you feel before and after the exercise?

  • When might this breathing technique be helpful at camp?

  • How could practicing this regularly help you in challenging moments?
